As time resumed, Mitsui was locked away in a jail cell. There were two others in the jail with her, although Mitsui made no contact with them. Lola saw the building she was in and returned to find her owner. Meanwhile, Seraphina, Kida, and Jayr had gone in the direction Mitsui pointed, looking for Hark’s dead body. Upon finding it, they placed it in the bag of holding and then followed Lola to the prison.
Jayr thought he would try and speak with the guards, so he went in and made some conversation. Learning that Mitsui was imprisoned while her crimes were being investigated, Jayr inquired about the percentage of people that are allowed to go free after an investigation. Not satisfied with the response of “some”, Jayr was getting ready to leave, tipping the guard one gold coin. Confused, the guard asked if this was a bribe? Jayr said it could be if he considered it one and was promptly thrown in jail for attempting to bribe a guard. Seeing Mitsui in a cell, Jayr reassured her that “Everything is going to plan!” When asked what he meant, Jayr replied, “Oh, nothing.”
Wanting to speak with Mitsui before just breaking her out, Seraphina gave Lola to Kida and asked her to wait for her. She then snuck into the prison. Upon seeing some guards heading towards the cells, she carefully followed right behind them. She then found another spot to hide and listened in as the guards spoke with Mitsui. They informed Mitsui that they had not found the dead body she had mentioned. This upset MItsui. The guards then turned around to leave, locking the prison area behind them. Seraphina snuck over to Mitsui and asked if MItsui wanted to be broken out. Mitsui just replied with “wait.”
Kida and Lola were waiting outside for Seraphina’s return. A few hours passed but eventually a few guards questioned her. She said her cat had gotten loose but she “found her now and thank you and good night” and with that left.
Several hours later, another set of guards returned to the cells with a female dwarf, who had been arrested for being drunk in public and causing a disturbance. Seraphina used this opportunity to get back out, but was spotted by the guards near the entrance. She then used Disguise Self, turning into a Halfling guard she saw earlier. Although they tried questioning and talking to her, her short responses made them suspicious. When one of the guards went to touch her, he noticed it was an illusion. Seraphina dashed out and ran away from the guards, who were unable to catch her. This caused extra guards to be called. Meanwhile, the drunken dwarf attempted to make conversation with MItsui but was ignored.
Kida and Seraphina managed to meet up and spent the night at the stables. The next morning, Jayr and the dwarven woman were let out of jail. Jayr was charged a 20 gold fine for attempting to bribe the guards but allowed to go free. He went off to the stables as he remembered the horses were there, and met up with Kida. Seraphina had slipped away, not wanting to deal with Jayr, and went into town for breakfast and to listen to the local gossip.
He told Kida about how racist people were. Arresting a dwarf for being drunk, arresting him for tipping, and to top it all off there were no humans in the prison. This angered Kida and the two decided to talk to whoever was in charge. After knocking on a random house, and annoying the owner, Jayr was pointed in the right direction to talk to the Waterbaron, the person in charge of Yartar.
Upon arriving at city hall, Jayr and Kida tried talking to the guards on duty, explaining their desire to talk to the Waterbaron. The guards asked if they had an appointment, and what their names were? They were told Jayrndkida and Ndkida. They found no such names on the list. After insisting a bit more, one of the guards went inside and talked with the Waterbaron, Nestra Ruthiol, on what she wanted done with these two. Hearing the complaints, she asked them to meet her for dinner at the Waterbaron’s Tavern that evening. They left and did some shopping, buying some nice dresses to get ready for the evening.
Seraphina, meanwhile, went to the temple, looking for someone to cast Augury. While no one had it prepared, a priest mentioned he could cast it for her the next day, in exchange for a donation to the temple. Seraphina gave a small donation before heading to the stables. There she found a note written in the dirt from Kida, explaining where they had gone and why. After casting Speak with Animals and asking the horses why she was with this group (and receiving no real good answer), she fed them before heading to the docks to think. There she saw Kida and Jayr walking into the Waterbaron’s Tavern, wearing their new dresses. Seraphina snuck in and sat at a nearby table.
Nestra arrived with her translator, to assist in communications with Kida. She asked the two who had sent them, and upon convincing her that no one had, that they were here because their friend was unjustly imprisoned, she explained how everything was, in fact, fair. The evidence, at this time, was not in Mitsui’s favour, as there was no body. Seraphina, overhearing this, joined the conversation and explained they might know where the body was. They also talked about the poison, asking if the poison in their dead friend could be matched to the poison the assassin had on him, proving Mitsui acted in defense of her friend? Nestra said it would. The party then agreed to bring the body to city hall the next day at noon. Jayr also complained about being imprisoned for tipping. Nestra said she’d look into this as well. The party then retired for the night, Seraphina and Kida at the Inn and Jayr helping at the temple.
The next day, the party met at the temple. Seraphina waited until just before noon before asking the priest to cast Augury, her plans were to show Hark’s body to Nestra. The results were weal. She then asked if she should bring Jayr along, and once again the results were weal.
The three went to city hall and were allowed in this time, and Nestra had a wizard with her.The party brought Hark’s body out of the Bag of Holding. After casting detect poison, it was determined that the poison was different, although very rare and expensive, being a purple worm’s poison. They asked if they could use the body to further investigate things. Seraphina asked if they’d get it back, Nestra said they didn’t know. They would give them 20,000 gold, the bounty offered for Hark’s body by the Zhentarim, and promised to do her best to get it back for them. Seraphina said it was not her decision to make but Mitsui’s and explained they would have to ask her. Jayr was also given 25 gold, as an apology for being wrongfully imprisoned, and told to try and explain his customs better in the future.
Nestra agreed to asking Mitsui and brought the group to the prison. Explaining the situation to MItsui, they got permission to use the body. Nestra told the party it may take a few days, but she would pay for their stay in town as they waited for the results.
Over the next few days, Seraphina heard rumours that someone in town was looking for a vigilante-like person with green eyes. Expecting this to be about Xeric, she followed the rumours and met the man in question. It turned out he was told to ask for this person, as a Mitsui would be travelling with him. Seraphina explained to this individual that MItsui was in jail. He thanked her and left. Seraphina transformed into a bat and followed him into the prison.
The man spoke with the guards, and upon showing them a paper, was allowed to speak with Mitsui. He introduced himself as Jackal, a servant of Lord Daerivoss. He inquired about what happened, as from what he knew of her, Mitsui was not known to promote senseless violence. Mitsui explained the situation, and Jackal told her he would see what he could do. He left the prison, with Seraphina still following, and went directly to City Hall. Although he did not have an appointment, he was allowed in. He spoke with Nestra, explaining Mitsui was an acquaintance of Lord Daerivoss, and wanted to help her get out as he believed her to be innocent. Nestra explained they were investigating and would free her if all she said turned out to be true. He asked to be kept informed of the case, to which Nestra agreed before Jackal left.
A few days later, Nestra found both Jackal and our heroes, and let them know Mitsui would be allowed to go free. They continued to the prison, where Nestra apologized to Mitsui, as they could not keep the body, but presented her with the 20,000 gold and told her she was free to leave. Mitsui shook Nestra’s hand and said “thank you for justice.” Jackal said he would like Mitsui to come to Neverwinter with him, as Lord Daerivoss wanted to see her. Mitsui agreed, and Jackal said he would get the rest of his men. Thus, time came to a standstill as our heroes’ next adventure awaits them.
