Princes of the Apocalypse Session 21 Recap: Echoes of Aerisi and the Wyvern Rider’s Challenge

Returning to Windharrow, the group found themselves caught in yet another strange moment—Zonga, the smallest among them, had taken refuge under Isaac’s newly acquired pet wolf. Windharrow, eyeing the wolf with curiosity, requested that it howl a tune, trusting Isaac’s claim that it would enhance the choir’s performance.

With their presence accepted, Windharrow led the group to the chamber where Aerisi was supposed to be, but to their surprise, she was nowhere to be found. The heroes investigated the area, using the opportunity to practice their own singing to test the acoustics of the room. To their own astonishment, their voices rang out better than expected, earning a nod of approval.

Later, the group was led to a resting area, passing by a djinni who had been forced into servitude, laboring to repair the temple. He was currently restoring the broken wheels that Valerian had shattered during a previous encounter.

Splitting off to explore further, the silence was soon pierced by the agonized screams of tortured prisoners. Rushing toward the source, they found kenku, gleefully mimicking the cries of their victims. Eeyore remained apart from the fight while the rest of the group regrouped and took down the tormentors. Unlike other prisoners they had encountered, these captives thanked the heroes for their rescue, asking for help getting back to safety. One man pleaded for aid in finding his wife, who had been taken deeper into the temple.

The party divided, with some escorting the rescued captives back to the surface through the water temple, where they fought off lurking shadows. Meanwhile, others continued to investigate the temple—or in some cases, chose to practice their singing with Windharrow.

Once reunited, the group pushed forward, their curiosity driving them deeper. Suddenly, from above, a Howling Hatred cultist descended upon them, riding a mighty wyvern. Intrigued, Valerian questioned how one might claim such a beast as their own. The cultist, eager for battle, issued a challenge—defeat him and his wyvern in combat, and the beast would recognize Valerian as its new master. Valerian accepted the terms, and the duel began.

Isaac joined the battle soon after, aiding Valerian after he was shoved into the water. Just as he surfaced, a stone golem joined the fray, further complicating the fight. Undeterred, the two warriors battled fiercely, eventually striking down the rider and sending the wyvern crashing into the depths below.
