Princes of the Apocalypse Session 28 Recap: The Eternal Flame Reveals Itself

Under the bright light of day, the party convened at their camp, savoring a fleeting moment of tranquility after the tempest of chaos that had engulfed them. Eeyore, the two-headed troll, stirred a pot of sizzling meat, his culinary efforts aimed at calming the jittery warts nearby—though their unease lingered, especially with their leader simmering in the pot. Meanwhile, Xeiros took it upon himself to check on the druids, ensuring their safety in the wake of the recent disturbances that had rocked the area.

As the group deliberated over the druids’ authenticity, suspicions began to swirl, igniting a heated debate. Valerian, ever the healer, expressed his determination to mend the wounds of fallen fighters and delve deeper into the werewolf menace that plagued them. Yet, the thick fog that clung to the ground muddled their understanding of the chaos, shrouding their surroundings in mystery. In a daring display of freedom, Isaac soared into the skies, relishing the crisp air. Upon returning, he was invited by the druids to share a drink, but on their way to the tower, he overheard ominous chants about cleansing the land of the unworthy, sending a chill down his spine.

After investigating the werewolf blood, Xeiros and Valerian ventured to another camp, where they encountered a druid and two unseen magical presences that attempted to pilfer Valerian’s belongings. In a swift response, Valerian used his clerical powers to eliminate the two invisible pixies, ensuring his possessions were safe. Tensions escalated as the druid panicked and wondered why Valerian would kill so quickly. Another group of druids approached Valerian, asking to speak with him alone. This group revealed themselves as members of the Eternal Flame, a faction intent on reducing civilization to cinders. The druid who recoiled at the sight of the pixies’ demise was not affiliated with them.

While Valerian shared what he had learned with the rest of the party, Isaac, inside the tower, had sent a message through his wolf companion, Mini-Bin, asking for help. Shortly after Mini-Bin found the group, the atmosphere shifted as the members of the Eternal Flame attacked Isaac, prompting the party to roll initiative.

As the tension mounted, the air crackled with anticipation. Xeiros transformed into an eagle, poised for flight, while Yurian grappled to mount his back. The atmosphere thickened as cultists encroached upon Isaac, their intentions clear as they attempted to subdue him. He resisted valiantly, and the skirmish erupted into chaos—crossbow bolts whizzed through the air, fireballs illuminated the day, and Eeyore charged toward the looming tower while Valerian rode on Mini-Bin’s back, ready to join the fray. Meanwhile, Zonga, seizing the moment, convinced a bear to let him ride into battle, adding to the chaotic scene.

The battlefield erupted into a maelstrom of conflict, as the party faced relentless waves of cultists and summoned horrors. Isaac fought with valor, striking back with fierce determination, but soon succumbed to the onslaught, collapsing into unconsciousness. Valerian rushed to his side, reviving him just in time for the group to strategize their next moves amid the chaos of fireballs and walls of flame.

After a brief lull in the storm, Xeiros unleashed a powerful mass healing spell, restoring his allies to their feet. With renewed vigor, Valerian and Yurian pressed the assault, landing critical blows against their foes. Eeyore, employing his levitate ability, ascended to the tower’s peak, while Zonga and others battled fiercely to eliminate the remaining threats. The conflict reached a fever pitch, culminating in a final surge against the last of the cultists and their hellhound allies.

As the dust settled and the echoes of battle faded, the party regrouped, their spirits lifted by the spoils of victory as they discovered valuable loot among the fallen enemies. Amidst the lingering tension, they shared a moment of levity, united in their resolve to face the challenges that awaited them, ready to confront whatever dangers lay ahead.
