Prey For Death Session 8 Recap: The Mirror and the Masquerade

With their enemies exposed and their mission hanging in the balance, the assassins took a bold step—infiltrating the Crimson Citadel itself. Disguised as captor and prisoner, Markuss led a shackled Bjorn before the Vernai, hoping to gain an audience without suspicion. As expected, the council began interrogating their supposed prisoner, but before things spiraled, Makiri revealed herself, followed soon after by the rest of the group.

Tense moments followed as the Vernai scrutinized their every word. But through sharp reasoning and evidence of their righteousness, the assassins convinced the Vernai not only of their innocence in Ordulf’s death, but of High Priestess Saviya’s treachery. The revelation of her plot to overthrow Blood Mistress Jakalyn turned the tide. The Vernai issued sincere apologies and rewarded the group with gear—then presented them with a new task: track Saviya, who had recently vanished into the labyrinthine Grand Library. They handed over directions to the route she had taken.

Following the trail, the assassins arrived at a mysterious chamber. Before them stood a mirror engraved with ominous words:

“Do Not Discriminate Against the Living, For in Death We Are All Equal.”

As they neared, a voice echoed from beyond the glass, asking who approached. Agatha answered with the name of He Who Walks, and as Makiri stepped forward, the mirror’s surface shimmered and twisted—then lashed out, transforming into a monstrous creature. The party was thrown into battle.

While Makiri vanished through the portal unharmed, the others were left to contend with the animated mirror. After a grueling clash, they shattered the creature’s power and passed through the veil. On the other side, they reunited with Makiri, who described spectral visions of Ordulf and Sister Maeri—hollow and fading apparitions that vanished once she refused to fight them.

Now deep within the Grand Library and closer to uncovering Saviya’s final move, the assassins press on—knowing the next chapter may hold not just secrets, but the judgment of gods and ghosts alike.
