Storm King’s Thunder Session 18 Recap

Time resumes as our heroes approach the city of Waterdeep. Harshnag was greeted by the guards as he gently brushed by them and opened the gates, making small talk with them. Once in, he told his companions that he would speak with the Lords of Waterdeep about getting a reward, and they were free to look around as much as they would like.

Upon entering, our heroes noticed a castle in the sky slowly approaching Waterdeep. While the party was discussing what to do, Mitsui just took off to go shopping. Xeric decided to follow as that was better than doing nothing at all.

Seraphina and Kida found some guards and asked them whether anyone would be investigating. The guards informed them that they had no way to get up there. Seraphina suggested they might be available for the right price. The guard said he would have to go confirm with his captain. A few minutes later, he came back and told the two that they would pay them 5 gold a piece to investigate. The two agreed.

Meanwhile, the castle had settled over the town. Many of the people had retired to their homes out of fear. Xeric found a Trebuchet and convinced a guard to shoot him up to the castle. Although it missed, thanks to Xeric’s Ring of Feather Falling, he wasn’t hurt and tried again until he finally got up there. Once there he made contact with the giants.

Seraphina found Jayr and told him they were being paid to investigate the castle. Together they decided to put their friends in a bag of holding and fly up to the castle. Jayr would go grab Kida, and Seraphina would take Mitsui, as she had seen Xeric being flung up. Seraphina found MItsui and put her in the bag of holding, and they flew up to the castle.

Meanwhile, Jayr found Kida, who was talking with the guard about borrowing a large ladder to get up there. Once Jayr arrived he started talking about life insurance with the guard, asking for a diamond. The guard was completely confused, and said they wouldn’t be able to provide them. The two argued, but eventually, Jayr exlaimed this was ridiculous, and they needed a union, which caused more confusion. Jayr then left to talk to the local temples, looking for a diamond to buy from them but didn’t make much progress.

As Seraphina approached the castle, she noticed Xeric waving to her. Going up to him, she was brought to the giants. There were 8 stone giants and 2 cloud giants. The cloud giants were Count Nimbolo and his wife Countess Mulara. The giants had no desire to cause trouble. They were simply searching for old remnants of Ostoria, the ancient giant kingdom. They believed Waterdeep was built on the remains of an ancient giant settlement, destroyed by dragons tens of thousands of years ago. At Xeric’s suggestion, they agreed to come down and talk to Harshnag first. Mulara was suspicious of “small folk”. Upon questioning her, they learned that small folk had apparently killed Neri, the queen of giants. Neri had been the one who always encouraged giants to be kind towards the small folk. Then, to make things worse, their king, Hekaton, also disappeared, and the small folk were again the primary suspects.

The giants would prepare to come down and would join them in a couple hours. Xeric jumped down, as Mitsui jumped back into the bag of holding, and Seraphina flew down. When they found Kida, she was still trying to convince a guard to loan them a giant, 1000 foot tall ladder. Our heroes found Harshnag and Lady Laeral Silverhand, the Open Lord, ruler of Waterdeep and explained the situation. They agreed to speak with the cloud giants. Eventually, Jayr showed back up. Mitsui gave him a bag and told him to “stay”. The group then met with the giants for peaceful negotiations, where they agreed to allow the giants to look through Waterdeep.

The group then spoke about a reward for solving the giant situation. Lady Silverhand gave our heroes 2 options. They could either choose a 10,000 gold reward or to be made a Lord of Waterdeep and be given land. They each chose the gold. Since it would take a bit of time to get ready, our heroes headed to Nightstone at the whim of Mitsui.

As they approached, they saw the town was being rebuilt. They were immediately greeted by joyful villagers, happy to see the return of their heroes. The temporary leaders were Hiral Mystrum, the local priest, and Morak Ur’Gray, the innkeeper who had first spoken to our heroes when they found the captive villagers. They were waiting for a new leader to be sent from Waterdeep. Mitsui provided some money to the villagers to help with the last of the repairs. Our heroes were also provided accommodations for the night, free of charge.

The next day, Mitsui went to the Dripping Caves, where she had met Hark. There she found some goblins who were suspicious of Mitsui. She told them to fetch their leader, whom she knew. They left and returned a few minutes later with Snigbat. Mitsui told them about what happened with Hark and asked if Snigbat was being a good leader. While she said she was, Mitsui could tell from the other goblins she wasn’t being the type of leader Mitsui would approve of. Snigbat insisted she was strong, so she and Mitsui fought. Mitsui simply knocked her unconscious and told the other goblins to take care of her and help her be a better leader, then gave them a healing potion and left.

Our heroes returned to Waterdeep where they met Harshag and then started the long journey to the Spine of the World. They took a quick stop in Rassalantar, where they had some of the best ail of their lives at the Sleeping Dragon Inn. Kida and Jayr had a bit of a drinking contest, with Jayr passing out yet again from alcohol. Thus time came to a stop, as our heroes rested for the night.
