When time resumed, the ambush started. Although the Zhentarim were not expecting to be betrayed, they proved more difficult than our heroes originally thought. The world itself seemed to be against them, or it was a fan of karma, as Varyn fell during combat. Once Varyn fell, our heroes quickly finished off the Zhentarim.
Speaking with the guards, our heroes agreed to bring the villagers back. They headed back to the inn in order to recover from the fight. There they met Xeric, a humanoid rogue. Xeric was a mercenary, willing to do seemingly anything for the right price. He questioned the party members and figuring that they could help him turn a profit, decided to join their group. The party then rested at the inn. After a while, Mitsui realized she was hungry. Having never eaten goblin before, she decided to try out this new protein.
The party started to hear the sound of chains creaking. Looking out the window, they noticed a group of twenty or so orcs arriving in town raising the drawbridge. As Xeric tried to sneak around and find out what was going on, he was caught by the orcs. Xeric noticed the orcs were wearing necklaces made of elf ears. Thanks to some quick thinking and quick talking, Xeric found out the orcs were at war with some of the local elves and were on the retreat after suffering heavy losses. He convinced them to hire him and his new colleagues as mercenaries to help take out the elves. They left through the south exit, by way of the broken bridge to the keep, going down to the moat and swimming across.
They decided to go seek out the villagers in the cave. On their way, they encountered a group of elves, possibly the same ones the orcs were running from, and rather than fight, Mitsui attempted to communicate with them. She explained that the village had been taken over by orcs, but didn’t want the elves to take the village for themselves, as it wasn’t their home. The elves assured Mitsui they had no interest in the village but only wanted to stop the orcs. Mitsui was happy with this response, and our heroes continued on to the cave. Xeric, on the other hand, was not pleased; as he had seen an opportunity to make a profit.
The group arrived at the cave, ready to go in, but alas the world’s energies were growing thin. It was again time for the world to freeze.
