Outlaws of Alkenstar Session 33 Recap: Clockwork Chaos and Conspiracy

As the sun dipped low in the sky, casting long shadows across the dusty floorboards of the old ruins, our band of adventurers set forth into the unknown. Caolán Moonclaw, a sly figure with a knack for sneakin’ about, scouted ahead, his keen eyes spotting a room free of those skeletal crocodiles that had haunted their steps. He signaled for his companions to join him, and Jace, ever the cautious one, pressed his ear against the door. The whirring of gears and the clanking of machinery echoed from within, a sound that sent a shiver down the spine.

With a careful hand, Jace checked for traps, finding none, and cracked the door open, revealing a chamber that looked like a wild mechanical beast, with rotating wheels and vertical gears creating a treacherous landscape. The party stepped inside, aware that a hasty move could spell disaster. Just as Jace made his way toward an opening, the undead rose from their hiding spots, and the air filled with the stench of decay as combat erupted.

Caolán, quick on the draw, took aim at one of the zombies and let loose a critical shot, stunning the creature with a blow that rang out like a gunshot in the still air. A zombie crawled through the gears, only to be crushed under the relentless machinery, while another lunged at Jace but missed its mark. The battle intensified when a third zombie set Jace ablaze, though he managed to shake off the worst of the flames. In retaliation, Jace fired a split shot, but fate had other plans; his gun jammed after a risky reload, leaving him exposed to the hungry grasp of a nearby zombie.

Stirmi, the druid with a heart as wild as the untamed plains, unleashed a wave of vital energy against a zombie, critically damaging it and leaving it weak. Scarlet, the sorceress with fire in her veins, unleashed a fireball that roared through the chamber, catching both foes and allies in its fiery embrace. Only Caolán felt the heat, thanks to the zombies’ immunity to flames. With a steady hand, Caolán took down another zombie, triggering an explosion that sent shockwaves through the room. Jace called out for healing and deftly maneuvered across the gears to escape the melee, while Stirmi sent forth a burst of positive energy that healed his comrades and laid waste to several undead.

The battle raged on, with chemical zombies detonating like dynamite, causing chaos in their wake. Scarlet mounted her trusty steed, Crimson, and executed a strategic retreat, while Caolán finished off the last of the chemical zombies with a well-aimed shot. With the dust settling and the combat concluded, the group closed the door to the hostile chamber and regrouped upstairs, their hearts still racing.

With caution in their steps, Jace donned his hood and vanished from sight as they entered the next chamber, where pistons and gears moved like the heart of a great machine. Caolán, ever the hunter, marked the enemy, a fella named Parsus, for death while keeping to the shadows. Scarlet cast haste and fly on her allies, giving them the speed of the wind. Caolán opened fire, and the first shot rang out, but Parsus retaliated with a poisonous cloud that swept across the battlefield like a storm.

Stirmi charged forward, striking Parsus with the force of nature itself, while Jace, now visible, engaged him directly. The fight escalated as constructs joined the fray, launching preserved heads like cannonballs at the party. In the midst of the chaos, Scarlet found herself confused, her magic turning against her as she inadvertently targeted Caolán. The rising pistons launched the adventurers into the air, adding to the tumult of battle. Yet, amidst the confusion, Stirmi unleashed a crushing wave that knocked Parsus to the ground, giving Jace the opening he needed to leap down and strike.

In a twist that would make even the toughest gunslinger pause, Parsus surrendered mid-fight, prompting the party to halt their attacks. They accepted his surrender and listened as he offered knowledge about turning corpses into undead clockwork soldiers. When questioned about Deputy Loveless, Parsus revealed a dire plan to level the Great Waterfall using pyranite charges, with detonation expected soon. He handed over a clockwork key linked to the bombs, and the party resolved to confront Deputy Loveless to prevent the impending disaster.

With their mission clear and the stakes higher than a rattlesnake’s tail, the group returned to the Barrel and Bullet Saloon, ready to prepare for the challenges that lay ahead.
