Abomination Vaults (2) Session 27 Recap: Devil’s Bargain and Battle

In the depths of their latest adventure, the party deftly adjusted their encumbrance, with Shadow Bell stashing the Lantern of Empty Light. Their journey took a thrilling turn as they confronted minor devils, swiftly dispatching two zebubs and a barbazoo devil, leaving no trace of their presence. Revisiting the arena where they had once battled the formidable Shangri Hole Behemoth, the echoes of past conflicts hung heavy in the air.

Venturing south of the gug’s territory, they stumbled upon an unexplored chamber, its transparent stone wall revealing a room filled with trapped creatures, including the haunting “green ghost lady.” A small Winged Devil, with a sinister whisper, urged them to shut the door to avoid capture. In a tempting offer, the devil proposed a contract granting “Devil’s Luck” in exchange for a century of servitude after death. However, the party stood firm, rebuffing the devil’s attempts to barter, confident in their prior knowledge of Urevian and the pendant pieces.

In a surprising twist, one among them chose to accept the devil’s offer, gaining the promised luck and forging an unusual bond. Meanwhile, another scrutinized the contract, uncovering a hidden clause that could escalate death effects, leading to a resolute refusal to sign. The party engaged in a strategic discussion about potential spells that could void the contract should the need arise, showcasing their tactical prowess.

With their objectives clear, they set out to retrieve Carman Rajani, a blacksmith crucial to their mission, and transport the prisoner Cynemi for a bounty. After a daring rescue, freeing Cynemi from her chains, they escorted Carman back to Otari. The guards confirmed Cynemi’s identity, rewarding the party with gold for her safe return. Following a night of recovery, the party readied themselves for the challenges ahead, with Shadow Bell updating her spells and Slych acquiring a poison dagger.

Equipped and resolute, they returned to the ominous red-sealed gateway, where Slych used the pendant to dispel the barrier. Beyond the door, they faced two imposing Levelox Devils, their six-legged forms menacing as they wielded tridents and nets. Urevian, a contract devil, greeted them as friends, revealing his need for Carman’s soul to fulfill a powerful patron’s contract. He offered to aid them in their quest but demanded Carman alive in return.

The party, valuing their principles over a deal, opted for combat, citing insufficient benefits. As tension mounted, one prepared his weapon with Silver Salve, ready for the impending clash. Urevian invited a free hit, which was eagerly accepted, resulting in a powerful opening strike that set the tone for the ensuing duel. Urevian quickly isolated one with a Wall of Force, while the Levelox engaged Shadow Bell and Slych in a fierce battle.

Shadow Bell unleashed her spells, casting Pebblestorm and Electric Arc, though the Levelox’s resistance dulled their impact. Lightwing rallied the team with Bless and Fear, demoralizing their foes. The battle raged on, with one champion enduring Urevian’s strikes while taunting him, showcasing their resilience. As Urevian weakened, he ominously proclaimed he would return, dissipating upon defeat.

With the Levelox still a threat, Slych utilized Lightning Dash to strike, while Shadow Bell, ensnared by a net, fought valiantly to help finish the remaining devil. After the fierce battle, the party regrouped, healing and freeing Shadow Bell from her restraints. They searched Urevian’s office but found the infernal contracts unreadable, and the bright red light above faded with his defeat, a somber reminder of their victory.

Their exploration continued as they discovered an elevator shaft leading deeper toward Bellcora’s Sanctum. However, their descent was abruptly interrupted by a sudden attack from mummy gnomes, which they quickly dispatched, showcasing their combat prowess. A chuul, captured and begging for freedom, was released by one who showed mercy, allowing the creature to swim away, grateful for its newfound liberty.

As they pressed on, the party encountered more gnome mummies, navigating the dangers of the lair with determination. Each encounter brought them closer to their goals, a testament to their relentless pursuit of justice and the sacrifices made along the way.
