Abomination Vaults (2) Session 30 Recap: Specters, Shadows, and Secrets

In the aftermath of their latest confrontation, the party regrouped in a dim dungeon corridor, nursing their wounds after a fierce battle. Shadow Bell, the storm druid, took charge, her healing magic enveloping Slych, Lightwing, and Sid as they recovered from their clash with the the wisps. However, their brief respite was shattered when the vengeful spirit of Belcorra materialized through the wall, demanding they vacate the area.

Undaunted by the ghost’s ominous presence, Lightwing stepped forward, using sheer intimidation to shift the encounter’s momentum. Seizing the moment, Shadow Bell executed a daring Blazing Dive aimed at the ghost, though her follow-up strike failed to breach Belcorra’s defenses. Slych unleashed a powerful Elemental Blast that struck Belcorra with full force, solidifying his pivotal role in the fight. He then employed Four Winds, allowing his allies to maneuver out of the cramped hallway and into a more advantageous position.

Belcorra retaliated with a devastating Feeblemind spell aimed at Sid, leaving him confused and disoriented. Despite his best efforts to resist the curse, Sid found himself permanently Stupefied until a cure could be found. As the party strategized their next move, Lightwing scouted the area, seeking to locate Belcorra while avoiding direct confrontation. Meanwhile, Sid wandered aimlessly through the dungeon, prompting his companions to gently guide him back into their ranks.

Shadow Bell attempted to cast Cleanse Affliction on Sid, but her efforts were thwarted, and the situation grew increasingly dire. Recognizing the need for a strategic retreat, Slych urged the party to withdraw, proposing they negotiate with Belcorra to halt her relentless attacks. The ghost pressed her curse, but Sid managed to resist further escalation. Ultimately, Belcorra chose to withdraw, granting the party a moment to regroup and decide on their next steps.

Agreeing to leave the level and return later, the group made their way back to Otari, with Sid leashed to Shadow Bell using improvised vine gear to prevent further wandering. Once in Otari, they began their recovery, resting to clear their Enfeebled and Drained conditions. Sid struggled with Bog Rot but ultimately succeeded in removing the affliction after several attempts, although he remained clumsy throughout the process.

Over the next few days, Shadow Bell dedicated herself to curing Sid’s Stupefied condition, casting Cleanse Affliction until it was finally lifted. The party seized the opportunity to sell surplus gear in Otari shops while awaiting orders from Absalon. Both Lightwing and Shadow Bell acquired scrolls of Revealing Light to counter invisible threats, and the group purchased a Wand of Vital Beacon for Shadow Bell, ensuring ongoing support in future encounters.

With preparations complete, the party planned to collect eggs from beneath the docks, discussing various breathing options to ensure their safety underwater. Lightwing and Shadow Bell cast Vital Beacon to bolster their capabilities before descending into the depths of the dungeon once more. Upon reaching a fetid subterranean lake, Lightwing soared above the water while Sid bravely swam down to search for the coveted eggs.

Suddenly, two large aquatic creatures known as chuuls emerged aggressively from the depths. As Slych and Shadow Bell followed Sid into the water, Lightwing landed near the shore, keenly observing the unfolding situation. Sid attempted to negotiate with the chuuls, declaring they were “friends, not food,” but the creatures demanded prey in return.

As Slych exited the water, the ground erupted with burrowing creatures, igniting a fierce combat. Slych unleashed a burst of elemental energy that injured multiple foes, while Sid maintained his diplomatic stance with the chuuls. Lightwing and Shadow Bell coordinated their spells, dealing damage and debilitating their enemies, leading to a swift resolution of the skirmish.

After the fight, Sid revealed that the chuuls were guardians of the eggs, prompting the party to explore a cavern filled with bioluminescent fungi and unsettling whispers. While investigating, they discovered a broken cage, hinting at the presence of Gug, four-armed monstrosities. Slych scouted ahead invisibly, spotting a Gug clutching a Red Glass Lens but deeming it too risky to attempt a theft.

The whispers grew louder, and Sid succumbed to their influence, becoming stupefied and revealing cryptic clues about a “blood eater” and the need for three lenses for an unknown purpose. Recognizing the danger, the party withdrew to gather more information. Their journey led them back to a Caligni outpost, where they encountered a woman who inquired about Chul eggs and the wisps they had slain.

Despite their attempts to intimidate her, the Caligni woman remained unfazed, unlocking a door that led deeper into their territory. Anticipating trouble, the party decided to strike first, with Slych launching an Aerial Boomerang at the woman. As the fight escalated, they faced reinforcements and shadow creatures, leading to a chaotic yet strategic engagement.

In the heat of battle, the party utilized their unique abilities, with Shadow Bell and Lightwing uncovering the enemies’ resistances and vulnerabilities. Ultimately, Dulac, the Caligni woman, surrendered, prompting the party to consider their next move, planning to interrogate her for valuable information about their ongoing quest.
